At our first site visit to two dilapidated, hollowed-out shells, we found a collapsed roof with a view to the sky. Within the ruins and trash, illuminated by the sun, a tree grew. This visit inspired a building configuration of two duplexes around a courtyard with a tree at the center. The u-shape plan offers two flats with views to the street, courtyard and rear alley. The arrangement of the four units around the courtyard maximizes light and air and promotes social interaction and outdoor living. Each apartment features ample cross ventilation and abundant natural light on three sides. The residential units are situated on a unique Washington street at the border of an historic zone. The goal for the facade design was to preserve the original historic elements while referencing the building’s commercial history.
