The City of Helsinki arranged in 2008 an Open Design
and Build Architectural Competition for the Myllypuro area north of Helsinki
City centre. The competition was won by Eriksson Architects in co-operation
with Finndomo Rakennus Oy. The aim of this co-operation was to create an area
with a wooden village atmosphere with flexible apartments in an ecological
fashion using the Finndomo pre-fabricated wooden structured houses. The houses
are pre-fabricated containing 4-6 building blocks which are assembled on the
building site. In this way the construction is very energy efficient and the
construction work on the site is minimized. The finished area is 17 500 sq
ms and will contain approximately 125 apartments.
