‘Earth Suites’ is a boutique hotel, located at ‘Megali Ammos’ area of Mykonos island. Two core elements of the Cycladic traditional architecture inspired the interior design approach.
Arches represent a central element of the Cycladic architectural vocabulary. Those rigid forms, originally conceived as structural element, are nowadays a bold visual reference of Aegean architecture.
The arch is employed as an operative experiment, where a familiar form is revisited through contemporary construction techniques. Various arch-based elements are used as openings, furniture and passages in a progressive approach to standard hotel-room components.
The second design principle is also rooted on the Cycladic tradition. Built-in elements have been long used in the configuration of spatial qualities on the vernacular architecture.
Treated as a multidimensional surface, the floor creates an intricate topography that emphasizes the sense of continuity in the space. This topography integrates the bed, bathroom sinks and lounge area of a standard hotel room, simultaneously highlighting the flowing relief of the open plan layout.
In both typologies, the materials approach is a direct reference to the ample use of white in the Cycladic islands. Screed concrete in white, natural wood and stone, comprise the main material selection, whilst carefully selected elements in gold tones add a touch of discreet elegance.
