My Humble House is a prestigious antique dealer based in Taiwan, well-known amongst Chinese Antique collectors internationally. Noiz was commissioned to design their first flagship store and contemporary art gallery, located in Taipei. The site occupies two sides of a former souvenir shopping arcade on the basement floor of a luxury hotel. One side of the arcade is designated for the antique store, while the other side for the contemporary art gallery. The passerby’s experience of walking through the long hallway in addition to his/her attention to the interior of the store became the two key elements of the design scheme. Our design of the store front consists of a series of intersecting steel cables which suspend polygonal-shaped display boxes. The cables are carefully located following interweaving parabolic curved surfaces and are both structural and decorative elements of the storefront. As one walks through the hallway, the apparent intersections suggested by the cables creates a mysterious atmosphere of flowing surfaces rather than mere lines. Additionally, each suspended display box is aligned with matching display niches in the back wall of the store. These become penetrating voids between store front and back which redirect one’s attention into the store. The gallery, on the contrary, is a simple glass and white walled box space for the display of contemporary art. Glass windows are detailed to be as effortless as possible, to contrast to the rich sense of shape and materials on the store side. The identical shape of the two spaces is almost the only similarity between the store and gallery.
