A Single-Gabled House for an Extended Family
Conceived as a home for an extended family spanning three generations, the project responds to the desire for shared living while preserving individual comfort. This intention gives rise to a single-gabled roof, forming a unifying architectural axis that embraces daily life and binds all family members together beneath one continuous canopy.
All living functions are concealed behind a perforated brick wall, creating a layer of privacy and allowing the house to gradually reveal itself upon entry. Having previously lived in a traditional shophouse, the new dwelling represents a liberation of everyday life, opening up space for children to run and play freely, while adults can sit, observe, and actively participate in the growth of younger family members.
The common area thus becomes the heart of the house, serving as the primary space where relationships between the three generations are nurtured and reinforced. Special attention is given to solar orientation and natural ventilation throughout the day. As the most frequently used space, the common area is positioned to ensure comfort from morning to evening.
The axis of the gabled roof is not defined solely by formal expression, but is derived directly from the internal functional organization. Zoning within the house is expressed outwardly as architectural form. The external gable axis aligns precisely with the stair, which functions beyond vertical circulation to become a transitional corridor that gradually mediates between shared communal spaces and the more private living quarters.
Rooted in the concept of an extended family living under a single roof, MY HAUS tells a story of collective living. The rhythms of daily life and the relationships among its occupants are translated into architectural form, creating a house that physically and emotionally embraces everyone within.
