The project is located in Playa Matamora, in the department of Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay, facing the vastness of the Río de la Plata. The coastal landscape, both rugged and quiet, is defined by the constant presence of the river horizon and native vegetation, creating an atmosphere of contemplation that shapes the intent of the intervention.
The work consists of an addition to an existing house, conceived as a music room that introduces a new dimension to dwelling. The program responds to the needs of Gustavo and Verónica, a couple deeply connected to music, seeking a space capable of hosting rehearsals, gatherings of artists, and moments of contemplation within an environment that is acoustically contained yet visually open to the surrounding landscape.
The proposal is based on a precise and synthetic operation: reducing architecture to its essential elements. The project is organized around two planes, floor and roof, supported by a minimal number of structural elements, creating a large inhabitable shade that extends the domestic space into the landscape. Silence is understood as a material of the project. The architecture withdraws into a minimal gesture that allows the exterior to flow through the room, incorporating light, air, and deep views toward the coastal landscape.
The work becomes part of the landscape, adopting a mineral character that establishes continuity between architecture and territory. The podium and structural supports are conceived as an austere piece made entirely of exposed concrete, capable of enduring the passage of time and incorporating the marks left by the humidity of the coastal climate. This vocation for permanence is expressed through a sober tectonic language that embraces aging as part of the construction of the work’s meaning.
The subtle elevation of the base above the natural ground allows the gaze to rise above the vegetation profile and connect with the river’s horizon. In contrast, the roof is expressed as a pure, dark line of strong gravitational presence, seemingly floating over the space. Constructed in wood and metal, it rests with precision upon the mineral base, providing material warmth and acoustic qualities that reinforce the character of the room.
The central focus of the space is defined by the piano, positioned as the core of the room, making explicit the musical vocation of the environment. The arrangement of the living and dining areas encourages both intimate listening and collective gatherings, allowing music to become the organizing element of the spatial experience. The presence of a fireplace introduces a sense of warmth and material comfort, reinforcing the condition of the space as a refuge and deepening the atmosphere of quiet contemplation that defines the project.
