The purpose of this thesis was to create a museum of contemporary art in the "Stone of Aphrodite" in Cyprus. The site is located on the south coast of the island between the city of Limassol and Paphos and is one of the major landmarks of the island since according to myth, Aphrodite emerged there in the waves beside the “Rock of Aphrodite". The absence of an area of "host", both for tourists and locals, was the operative reason for the proposal to create a modern art museum in the region. Besides the fact that the area is located 20 minutes from both cities and that there is no museum of contemporary art in those cities did the script for the creation of such a project even more realistic.
The intention was to create a project that speaks to both landscape features of the region and with the myth that characterizes it. The legend appears in response to the creation of a building which is essentially a path downhill towards the cliff with reference to the sacred processions of antiquity and the path leading up a temple such as the Parthenon and the path from the entrance to the temple. The myth still supported the creation of a game between the viewer through the rock to hide the sight of the rock with your entry to the outdoor track-building process and the resurgence of ending at the square, where the rock 'frames "between the limits of the building, creating a kind of focus to it.
The project is organized into three functional modules that can operate independently from each other. The first section consists of space reporting and the auditorium, located at the upper entrance of the project. The second section is the main exhibition hall of the museum and the third section it consists the restaurant, the shop-bookstore of the museum, the library and the offices.
The walls are made of concrete, clear-colored ground, wanting to enhance the sense of cracks in soil and layers that appear when the earth is cut and for shading purposes.
