The project we developed for the competition for the Guggenheim Museum in Helsinki combines a strange shape, that of an impressive flower typical of the northernmost reaches of Europe, the « Lakka Flower », and a design which, in terms of its style and approach, will be familiar to Finnish people. This combination of different elements confers on the building a presence that is simultaneoulsy incongruous and reassuring.
Located in the port of Helsinki, the museum is accessed from Tähtitornin Park via a footbridge, or through the docks, or by means of the curved paths cutting through a series of small, planted hills.
Our proposal – which was not retained by the competition’s jury – places the building, the « Lakka Flower », on an undulating wooden base whose movement and rhythm form walls and open spaces. The pure white fiberglass concrete « petals » of the building emerge from this base. On the side facing the sea, the building opens outwards, a glass wall providing a wide panoramic view of the ^port and its islands. Three materials are combined: white fiberglass concrete, a timber base, and a series of large glass chassis.
Prolonging the tense curves of the external facades, the interior walls and ceilings in highly polished timber evoke the inside of a boat and create a convivial feel. This is the heart of the museum, the grand atrium. It hosts all the visitor services – the bar, the restaurant, the shop, the ticket office – as well as temporary artistic events. The atrium is an homage to the original Guggenheim Museum. All the exhibition halls are located on the first floor, which is reached by escalators or by the panoramic lift surrounded by the spiral of the stairwell. Taken together, the volume of the atrium, the stairwell and the lift create a spectacular movement, an ascending wooden helix.
The atrium’s glass roof mirrors the shape of a snowflake. A cloud of stainless steel is featured in the centre, reflecting in all directions the images of the visitors, while at the same time protecting the atrium from direct overhead sunlight.
Notre projet pour le concours du musée Guggenheim d’Helsinki est l’association d’une forme étrange, celle d’une fleur impressionnante, typique des pays nordiques, la fleur de lakka, et d’un design assez familier aux Finnois dans son style et dans son approche. Cette association confère au bâtiment une présence à la fois incongrue et familière.
Situé dans le port d’Helsinki, le musée est accessible par une passerelle à partir du parc Tähtitornin, par les bassins du port ou par de petites collines plantées délimitant des chemins courbes vers l’entrée.
Notre proposition – qui n’a pas été retenue par le jury du concours – fait reposer le bâtiment, la « fleur de lakka », sur un soubassement constitué d’un ruban libre de bois, qui crée dans son mouvement les murs et les ouvertures. Au-dessus, les « pétales » sont faits d’une coque de béton de fibre perforée, d’un blanc pur. Vers la mer, le bâtiment s’ouvre largement par un mur de verre qui offre un large panorama sur le port et sur les îles. Ainsi, trois matériaux sont associés : le béton de fibre blanc, une base en bois et de grands châssis de verre.
Dans la continuité des courbes tendues des façades extérieures, les murs et les plafonds intérieurs sont faits de courbes de bois, finement poncées, évoquant l’intérieur d’un bateau et créant un sentiment convivial. C’est le cœur du musée, le grand atrium. Il abrite tous les services aux visiteurs, le bar, le restaurant, la boutique, la billetterie, aussi bien que les événements artistiques temporaires. Cet atrium est un hommage au musée Guggenheim originel. Toutes les salles d’exposition se trouvent au premier étage, que l’on atteint par les escalators ou par l’ascenseur panoramique, entouré par la spirale de l’escalier. Ensemble, l’escalier et l’ascenseur créent dans le volume de l’atrium un mouvement spectaculaire, une spirale ascendante faite de bois.
La verrière de l’atrium est inspirée de la forme d’un flocon. Un nuage d’acier inoxydable est disposé en son centre, réfléchissant dans toutes les directions les images des visiteurs, tout en protégeant l’atrium de la lumière zénithale.
