This project was to redesign and refurbish a 30 year old bench on the campus of Montana State University originally built by an advanced design/build studio in the architecture department by Proffesor McClure. It was originally built with the intention of incorporating a lightpole through the bench which was never completed. The original wooden top was falling apart and the project was slated for permanent removal from school grounds. The bench is located in the courtyard outside of the architecture building (Cheever Hall). I took on the redesign/rebuild as an independent study through the Dean of Architecture during my thesis year in 2006. Incorporating the original steel frame I added a concrete top with cast glass blocks woven throughout the top. The glss blocks are a nod to the the deconstructive result of the decay of the original top which served the courtyard for so long.
