Inspired by the garden’s rich materials and formal geometry, BBN Architects designed the new water feature at the Loose Park Rose Garden to be viewed from the garden’s entire perimeter and to complement its timeless and classical quality. An important consideration was the creation of a dramatic background for wedding photography as the garden is host to over 300 weddings annually. The highly crafted central bowl and pedestal are hand-carved of Italian Pietra Dura limestone, and subtly ornamented with rose vines and blossoms. The combination of historical reference and the strategic use of limestone helps to integrate the new fountain into its well-established context. BBN also led the design effort for a complete garden renovation in 2009. Using historical photos and renderings of the rose garden as a guide BBN was able to reestablish the original geometry of the garden as it was first conceived. The renovation included rebuilding the rose beds with edging, drainage, irrigation and a specialized growing medium and the addition of a crushed granite path which was removed in past years. The renovation culminated with the replanting of 1,200 new roses, which literally brought the beloved garden back to life.
