Vila Franca de Xira library was born in septembre of 2014. Is located on the banks of the Tagus River, on the site previously occupied by a factory that processed rice, hence its name "factory of words".
A few matters that entered the conceptual process:
The volumetric aspect of the old factory, the proximity of the Tagus River, the program for the library and finally the desire to produce an equipment that was to be effectively of good use by the population. This matter of approach was determinant in the conception of the program.
In this sense beyond the traditional areas of reading and media elements of a more casual or occasional nature (newspapers and magazines) an area of considerable size for children, a cafeteria zone, a room for exhibitions plus on ground zero a multiuse space to be used as an auditorium.
In a way to fight a possible sectarism and thus contribute to a bigger and effective relation between the users of this space, all the floors are naturally placed over each other spatially detached of each other in a way that grants a visual contact.
The gap derived from the layering of the different floors draws a void space of a very clear vertical aspect, that assumes itself as the main dynamic element of the library spatial concept. This vertical space is re-enforced by a vertical triangular window structure common to all floors.
This spatial concept allows a bigger and more effective relation between the users of this space thus allowing that each one can see and be seen and so becoming at the same time both as a spectator and an actor of this space.
We consider that this spatial and visual possibility associated with the reading of the surrounding landscape through glass surfaces of a triangular and trapezoidal expression contribute, via the particular aspect of the environment, of its visual field, to a development of the act of observation of the landscape in a new way of reading it.
We consider that this ensemble of aspects both of an organization and programmatic nature contribute to a bigger and clearer space democratization.
