Multifunctional complex Triathlon Towers is hardly the first project by APEX implemented on the CIS territory, however, its location, importance and recognizable image make it one of the most significant works of the bureau. A large-scale project in the center of Nur-Sultan (former Astana, Kazakhstan) is to become a new visit card of the fast-developing city. The towers, which rise above the banks of the Ishim River, connect two sides of the city visually and physically and define new dominants in the central area of Presidential Palace, House of Ministries, Bayterek Monument, Presidential Park and Astana Triathlon Park. The primary requirements of the customer were as follows: a bridge connecting two river banks that is integrated in the designed buildings (earlier the Ishim River could be crossed over only by one of the two already existing motor roads), preservation of the view on Ak Orda residence and an opportunity to use the upper levels of the towers as a panoramic observation point in order to create a new attraction of the capital.
To implement such a challenging goal, the authors immersed in the culture, symbols and customs of Kazakhstan. The image was inspired not just by the country’s nature – wavelike scarlet Aktau mountains were taken as the basis for the color of the complex , but also the most recognizable symbol of Kazakh people - yurt and its unique structure - greatly influenced the choice of the building’s form and facade solutions. The authors offered two concepts for the tower complex:
The first concept evisages two towers connected by two bridges – one on the level of the 1-2 floors, enabling free ship traffic along the Ishim River and designed as a pedestrian bridge, and the second one – on the level of the 16-18 floors connecting the buildings from above. The approach to the typical floor plan is rational: rectangular form provides for the most commercially successful usable floor area (within 1000-1200 sq.m). The lower office floors are more spacious, while the upper residential floors gradually decrease in area due to the 5 degrees inclination of the facade wall. This feature made it possible to design a typical 6 apartment-residential floor, 4 of which are located in the building corners with the orientation to two cardinal directions, a large light front and a panoramic view on the city.
The towers' facade consists of straight segments without the use of geometrically complex aluminum transparent structures. Natural ceramics and “kereghe-rhombs” used for the facade finishing give the building a distinctive look. Rhomb pattern is not just a decoration, it also smoothes away the coldness and impregnability of the full glazing which is rarely used for residential complexes.
The second concept is also based on the images of traditional Kazakh yurts. Their complex patterned structure was implemented throughout the towers facades built with the use of aluminum composite panels that overlay the structural glass background. The towers are connected with one bridge at the level of 1-2 floors, while the upper floors of the towers have panoramic floors with a spectacular bird’s-eye view to the city and the Ishim River.
As a concept of the site landscaping, the authors suggested to extend the pedestrian path and connect the three nearby parks which have never been connected before – Astana Triathlon Park, Bauyrzhan Momyshuly Park and President Park- with the inside tower bridge, thus creating the pedestrian arch that joins the two parts of the city divided by the Ishim river.
