Located on the Luming Peninsula in the center of Quzhou City, Dhawa Quzhou is adjacent to the Quzhou River to the east and the Luming Mountain to the north. The neighboring Banyan Tree and Angsana hotels will soon be opened in combination to cater to an increasingly precisely differentiated clientele. As a result, the Banyan Tree hotel cluster on the peninsula will integrate resort, business and other public functions, gathering popularity for this oasis in the city. As an emerging brand under Banyan Tree, a youthful field is prospering here. The diverse and open public spaces introduce a shared atmosphere for hotel services, in line with the unique positioning of the Dhawa brand of “Be Here, Be you”.
Natural Interposition
Quzhou is the largest mountain city in Zhejiang, and its special natural landscape forms the core of the designer’s impression of the site’s cultural heritage. Dhawa Quzhou Hotel is located in the most riverside part of the hotel cluster, with a spacious view of the Luming Mountain and the old town on the other side of the Quzhou River. The hotel building responds to nature from the vertical dimension, with a maximum height of 35m and a sheer lightness of form. The L-shaped layout divides the site into a front area and a back area: guests will arrive at the hotel from the back area, while the lobby bar, all-day dining restaurant and other spaces extend to the front garden to connect with the interface of nature.
As the basic module of the building, the 192 guest rooms are arranged on one side facing the northeast and southwest to maximize the geographical advantage of leaning on the mountains and overlooking the river.
In order to weaken the sense of volume, the set-back architectural technique not only outlines the image of the cascading mountain villages in Quzhou, but also generates the internal high lobby space.
Through the difference in spatial scale in the arrival sequence, guests can fully feel the rhythmical change from dark and low to bright and high, just like the experience of touring the local wonder of Longyou Grottoes.
Enjoyable Experience
In consideration of the young guests’ demand for the hotel’s complex functions, the design aims to convey the concept of shared social interaction through the public spaces on the ground and top floors. The large all-day dining restaurant on the ground floor is open and circulating, suitable for holding various events such as weddings, banquets and lectures.
Centered around a nine-story high lobby, each standard floor has a shared space of varying sizes. These small, scattered boxes, called “Nest”, are numbered and include vending machines for drinks and snacks, or small exhibitions, or allow for reading, board games and cooking. In the self-service process, guests can relax and follow their personal preferences, and meet face-to-face with fellow travelers from all over the world for a fun experience that is hard to replicate. The rooftop has a gym, a pool, a bar, an observation deck and other leisure facilities. Creating an opportunity to overlook the mountain landscape from here, the building is in dialogue with the city in the distance.
Unity Logic
Due to the geographical location of Quzhou as a “thoroughfare of four provinces”, the surrounding cultural memories are combined, and the façade language adopts the characteristics of Hui style architecture and is simplified to interpret them in a modern way. The traditional sloping roof elements are translated into cornice with mountain set-back to create the visual appearance of the ancient village in detail; the west side wall is abstracted from the Ma Tau Wall and combined with the staircase components to form an inward space with a sculptural sense, which not only effectively blocks the sunlight from the west, but also facilitates the integrated casting.
The overall structure adopts three major diagonal span steel columns linking the upper inclined frame, hanging the set-back guest rooms underneath, with a large-scale entrance canopy cantilevered horizontally. The technical treatment of de-facilitation has internalized the complex system of the building, and the exterior presents a simple texture of contrasting black and white, just like a bit of blank space in a landscape painting.
Epilogue
As a new-generation hotel brand, Dhawa Quzhou softens the boundary between city and nature in a unique form, and promotes inspiration with spaces that facilitate interaction. The design emphasizes the qualities of young travelers; it is not a limited destination, but will be user-driven to create a rich memory of the place.
