The presence of many cultures does not inherently result in multiculturalism. Rather, multiculturalism occurs when various cultures interact. If each culture is viewed as a strand, then multiculturalism is a knot which engages these strands to form a stronger entity. While still maintaining its individual identity, each strand also takes on additional meaning through interaction with the group. These knots of interaction do not occur in predetermined patterns; they are spontaneous encounters, deflecting each strand’s original trajectory, just as individuals evolve through interactions with others. The multicultural center provides a location around which these diverse cultural strands can “knot.” Spaces that host various activities, both programmed and unprogrammed, are wrapped in strands of materials that compose the design.
