MULBERRY, a British luxury brand known for its well crafted leather goods, engaged Spacemith to open its flagship store in New York City.
Mulberry’s flagship store is housed within two floors of a landmark building in the Soho neighborhood. The design concept for the retail floor was a bedazzled jewel box within a 14 foot historic shell. The existing beams and cast iron columns were embraced into the design with the retail floor plan. A 40 foot long refurbished skylight maintains airiness while bringing in
daylight over an informal seating area to the rear of the store. Elements such track lighting, HVAC, display units allow visual layering of the space. The black wood floor reflects the opulent brass clad millwork against the stark simplicity of the high gloss white panels throughout the space.
A feature 9 foot high corral made entirely of stacked books adds depth to the design while functioning as a
backdrop for the shoe display area. A 25 foot long, 5 ton, brass clad cash register is the focal point at the front of the store augmented by custom brass panel art work creating similar moments around the store.
The fitting rooms housed within a dark
grey high gloss lacquer box have fluted glass at the top that emits a warm glow through the barrisol ceiling. Fitting room walls are plush padded fabric, which is carried through to the main store on a 10 foot high wall across the fitting rooms. This 10 foot high 15 foot long padded wall houses a concealed 10 foot by 5 foot mirror that opens up to create a private shopping area. The cellar level houses office, staff spaces and merchandize storage and mechanical equipment.
The entire store maintains design clarity through its layout and material usage while conforming to the Mulberry brand identity.
