Long-time clients approached us about a property they had just purchased in the Los Altos Hills accompanied by a historic photo of a simple but welcoming entry courtyard to a white stucco home with green trim. The character of this photo became the vision behind the design of the entire 1.8 acre property, which included renovation and addition to a main house, site-wide landscaping, and a new pool and pool house.
The Los Altos Hills property was developed in 1928, but over the years the historic character of the main house was nearly lost under overgrown landscaping, incongruous additions, and outdated renovations that created a dark interior and confusing circulation. We stripped away the layers to revert the interior formal areas and exterior of the house to its original Spanish Colonial character, open up spaces to light and views, simplify circulation, and modernize the kitchen and baths. Large courtyards and open balconies accessed through a series of french doors on all sides of the house create a welcoming approach and a connection to the new pool, a distinctly contemporary pool house, and gardens. The materials and color palette were kept minimal throughout to tie existing and new, as well as historic and modern.
