The project started as a swimming pool for the family and ended as a complete design of the entire site both inside and exterior. There was one place to break through from the existing residence and we used that as a departure point for the addition. Since we could move horizontally across the parcel, each bedroom was stepped back as it crossed to give a view forward to the water but also to the side looking back at the pool. Each bedroom has more than one direction for views, light and air. Since the bedrooms were at an upper level, a new recreation room was developed below as well as covered open space. This area off the new rec room is a covered breezeway for outdoor uses even during the rainy season. As construction was underway, the owners decided to eliminate two of the four bedrooms. We improvised by creating the triangle room at the end of the addition and opened up the wall to the triangle terrace so it overlooks the pool area. The entire bedroom walkway was designed not to be a hall but as a glass enclosed gallery connecting the existing to the new. The roof was broken into two levels to provide a play of light and shadows throughout the day. While the addition was nearing completion, the owners decided to redo the existing residence, which was later to include kitchen and bedrooms. The out-of-scale roof projection over the upstairs bathroom was removed to bring the existing roof in a calmer scale with the new addition. The existing shell was kept but the cramped and dark spaces within were changed. The upper storage area off the master bedroom was opened to a light filled loft area that looks into the addition as well as the living room below. The existing roof was sliced in a long linear ribbon of glass so the colors of the day would be reflected inside. The clouds and ever changing sky can be visible throughout the living and upper loft areas. The kitchen was gutted and a window wall was created to look back into the planted illuminated hillside. Materials of stainless, blackened steel and plaster were used for new fireplaces and walls. Function alone is not enough. This was a project designed to excite the senses and to provide multiple living and recreational uses
