Located in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, this holiday apartment belongs to a Dutch-Brazilian couple who sought a full aesthetic transformation. Their primary request was to integrate the social area with the kitchen while making the most of the breathtaking view of the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon revealed through the expansive glazed façade.
The design focused on creating an open and cohesive spatial experience, enhancing natural light and framing the scenery of the lagoon and surrounding mountains. A single flooring material was applied throughout the social areas to reinforce continuity between spaces. Existing structural columns and beams were stripped to expose the raw concrete, offering a bold contrast to the refinement of the Tauari wood wall panels.
In the living room, a large L-shaped sofa encourages contemplation of the landscape, with a low backrest preserving openness between functions. Delicate pendant lights above the dining table were chosen to maintain an unobstructed view through the windows.
A sweeping curved wall corner softens transitions between social spaces and subtly widens visual perspectives toward the outdoors. Safety is ensured by translucent tempered-laminated glass along the window line, allowing the scenery to remain the protagonist.
The powder room entrance is discreetly concealed behind vertical wooden panels, while its interior finishes — slender vertical tiles — enable smooth rounded edges along the vanity wall.
In the kitchen, a central island in white laminate with an integrated cooktop promotes interaction and sightlines toward the landscape. Marble-pattern porcelain tiles above the countertop elevate the overall elegance.
The master suite was expanded by reducing the guest room footprint, and its bathroom now connects seamlessly to the bedroom through a black aluminum sliding door with fluted glass. The custom headboard integrates upper shelving with soft LED lighting. The ensuite features individual white-quartz vanities and a shower enclosed with frosted glass for privacy.
The visual identity throughout the apartment balances the exposed concrete’s gray tones with warm Tauari wood, light-colored joinery and furniture, white linen walls and curtains to heighten daylight, and soft neutral textiles for the upholstered pieces and rugs.
The resulting atmosphere is calm, welcoming, and serene — a refuge where the owners can unwind from everyday life while appreciating the iconic beauty of Rio de Janeiro.
