Petrakopoulos Residence
Kalithea, Penteli Greece, 2007 – 2011
Often, building a house, comes to answer together to all aspects of architectural design and to the conscious or unconscious fantasy of the owner for his future home. His memories and experiences, put together with the desires for a house that would embrace him like a garment, are sometimes compelling, often contradicting one another. The Petrakopoulos family, having deep Greek roots and on the same time coming from a very different country, Switzerland, presented a challenge in dealing with the concept of "merging together" two different modes of habitation. Petrakopoulos Residence, built in the mountains on the outskirts of urbanity, was asked to respond to all these conditions simultaneously, in a modern, technological, bioclimatic and adjusted with the mountainous context, way. The building is a basic main volume, accompanied by a second smaller volume of private rooms, attached to it. Structurally, it embodies an internal void, being core and staircase, surrounded by all the parts of the house. This core leads on the upper level to a small outdoor terrace, "into the roof", not being seen from the outside. The core consists a "hurt" to the project, taking roles of a living space, heating in the winter - cooling in summer, by the chimney effect, gives light and attaches all house's parts to a centre. The house well "rooted" on the ground, is raised to confront the mountain, the view, the winds, the "genius loqui".
