Nala Studio Architects was engaged to reimagine a character bungalow in Mount Eden whose original layout had become insufficient for modern family living. The clients sought a more functional plan that could support flexible work-from-home spaces, improved entertaining areas, and lifestyle amenities — including a swimming pool and sauna — while preserving the home’s original charm and complying with Council’s Special Character Areas Overlay.
Working within the constraints of an existing bungalow with dual porches, the design carefully negotiated heritage requirements and contemporary spatial needs. One porch was converted into an en suite for the primary bedroom, complete with a walk-through wardrobe and bespoke hair/makeup station, while the other porch was retained and expanded slightly to create a welcoming covered entry.
A central hallway — typical of early 20th-century homes — was restored and enhanced with integrated storage. Adjacent to this is a flexible media room with a built-in desk, calibrated for study, work or relaxation. The original children’s bedrooms were refreshed, and a new fourth bedroom now provides accommodation for guests or a dedicated home office.
The main bathroom was reconfigured with a bathtub placed for everyday comfort, acknowledging how families inhabit the home. North-facing living spaces open towards a generous timber deck and pool, anchored by a generous kitchen island and a concealed scullery behind seamless cabinetry. Floor-to-ceiling sliding doors create a fluid connection between interior and exterior, while frameless glass pool fencing preserves visual clarity.
Site challenges included retention of an existing dry-stacked stone boundary wall that did not meet pool barrier heights. A contextual contemporary wall now complements the new architecture while satisfying regulatory requirements. The outdoor program also includes a lawn, barbecue zone and sauna pavilion.
All interior joinery was custom designed — from kitchen cabinetry and wardrobe storage to window seats, shelving and work nooks — ensuring each space responds intuitively to family use. Attention to practical details such as outdoor power points and accessible towel storage enhance everyday living.
The completed renovation preserves the bungalow’s special character while dramatically improving spatial flow, amenity and lifestyle quality. The family now enjoys increased accommodation, flexible work and living zones, integrated indoor–outdoor connection, and purpose-driven spaces reflective of contemporary family life — all within the context of a heritage neighbourhood.
