Motherwell Shopping Centre is located on the outskirts of Gqeberha in the heart of Motherwell, the area’s largest township. The centre was originally designed in the 1990s as a face-brick strip mall with covered walkways.
The upgrade comprised the addition of a stand-alone structure to house national building material supplier, Cashbuild, as well as an extension to the mall itself.
The extension saw the addition of a new internal mall layout housing a new anchor tenant, Boxer, and several new national tenants, including Clicks, while the exterior facades received a much-needed facelift in order to modernise the overall centre experience.
An elegant steel portal structure creates the envelope for the new interior mall which features generous volumes and plenty of natural light. Emphasis was placed on the use of low maintenance, robust and hardwearing, yet elegant materials. The combination of steel, timber, glass and polished concrete floors interact seamlessly to create a modern, sophisticated spatial feel.
