This large, tree-lined, flat
lot in Atherton provided a wonderful opportunity to build a generous shingle-style
house and pool house. The house
and pool house were commissioned eight years apart for two different
clients. The house has an open
plan with abundant natural light and generous spaces opening onto a trellised
outdoor patio and fireplace. The
pool house opens onto the pool deck and patio areas, and blends with the main
house while reflecting a decidedly more contemporary look and feel.
CAW was able to meet the
needs of the two different clients and provide a vision for linking the two
projects through a common use of materials and natural light, and by dissolving
the indoor/outdoor relationship of the major spaces. The buildings were oriented for good sun exposure and privacy,
and to preserve the open green space of the lot.
How CAW achieved this
- CAW created an open plan that provides for easy flow through
living, dining, and kitchen areas.
- Incorporating folding doors enables the indoor living
areas to open out onto the garden, trellis, and outdoor fireplace.
- Designing the pool house to open onto the pool patio allows
for large parties and casual living in contrast to the more formal entertaining
spaces of the main house.
- Incorporating similar materials tie the buildings,
garden, and pool together.
