Nestled in the woods, this 6,000 sf retreat seamlessly melds with nature—a haven for both repose and adventure. Crafted as a modern alpine cabin, the design pays homage and defers to the natural landscape.
Situated on a 3-acre wooded lot, the architectural narrative unfolds as a single, elongated structure, segmented by apertures in the ebonized wood siding. The simple bar plan was employed for construction efficiency and a softer touch on the land.
Embracing an open floorplan, the main living space spans the width of the house, anchoring to the land on one side and engaging the treetops on the opposite. Limestone walls ground the house and help choreograph the entry sequence. The main living area is bookended by the primary suite and guest bedrooms. A double-sided fireplace connects the heart of the living room with an intimate reading den.
Materials were chosen for resilience and harmony with the surrounding forest. Exterior wood, stone, and steel playfully, yet richly, blend with the site resulting in a modest insertion in the landscape. Framed views punctuate the private areas of the house, with strategic window views becoming landscape art.
The project utilized SIPs (structural insulated panels) for the roof system. The panels facilitated a highly insulated roof assembly and accelerated the construction process. Closed cell spray foam insulated wall cavities create an airtight wall assembly; the addition of continuous exterior insulation minimizes thermal bridging and raises the insulation value of the walls to R41.
Highly efficient windows, using a hybrid fiberglass and UV stable polymer maintain a high comfort level in the home’s secondary spaces.
