::: Monument of 100 anniversary of the Declaration of Independence of the Albanian State

Bulevardi Dëshmorët e Kombit, Tirana, Albania

YEAR
2012
independence
monument
at the beginning of 2012
an international competition took place for a monument on the occasion of the
100th anniversary of the declaration of independence of the albanian state. the
international jury chose us as winner team out of 66 competition entries, coming
from albania,
germany, italy, mexico, island, canada and spain.
our entry was inspired by
a traditional albanian defense tower called kulla. for us, the kulla symbolized
suppression and captivity, that the albanian population sufferd from the ottoman
empire before the declaration of independence in 1912. we took an abstract kulla
tower and cut it in two parts. this separation is a symbol for the liberation of
the albanian people.
the monument was built in
fall 2012. It consist of two 6,40 m high elements. 3280 bronze pyramides form
the outside cladding. they are an abstract interpretation of the kulla
brickwork. the inside cladding is plane and smooth. every element has one
theme. On the left element the
independence declaration
is engraved. On the right element there is the albanian eagle, symbol for the
independent albanian state.
