A new single classroom Montessori School in the heart of St Andrews.
Located in the heart of the historic part of the town this contemporary space provides a modern teaching facility set within a garden haven.
It was a long stretch to get this project past the planners (but we did it!) with the highest quality finish with natural materials throughout.
Approached through a relatively unassuming garden gate adjacent to the Byre Theatre, the nursery is approached via a winding garden path working its way between the historic rigg walls. Once at the school, a distinct angle on the building creates a juxtaposition between the new building and the historic walls and creates a sheltered play space.
Inside, an open plan space is lit by rooflights and full height windows. The floor is heated for all that play time and a bespoke kitchen is at the heart of the space. The roof is scaled down with a pattern of beams with the rooflights between.
The use of Scottish larch allows the building to sit quite comfortably within it’s garden environment, yet also allows it to stand out as a modern building. Completely hidden from public view, the only way of seeing this building is from above, and this is softened by the use of a green roof.
