Back in 1952 when MOMAT was established in the midst of postwarreconstruction, lots of ‘huts’ were still found in Tokyo. The hut, whichwas built manually out of necessity by those who had little knowledgeabout construction, could be deemed to be an archetype of the house. Itattracts us also in terms of unfinished building where people keepinnovating their living space on a case-by-case basis. The MOMAT Pavilion is located at the front yard of the museum andconsists of three buildings: Pavilion Window, Pavilion Tower, andPavilion Swing. These buildings lacking the form of ordinary houses aredesigned as ‘non-house’ that Studio Mumbai. Thus attempting to create anambiguity between interior and exterior. In the centre of the yard, will stand several constructions named BirdTrees made from bamboos and originally a tool to attract birds found inUdaipur, Rajasthan, India. This is representative of how Studio Mumbaidevelops such anonymous artifacts found by continuous fieldwork intotheir superb architectural design.
