Summer House Renovation: Cedar Extension in Steep Terrain
Project Description
This renovation and extension of a summer house was shaped by the steep terrain of the site. Instead of flattening the plot, the architecture followed the natural levels of the landscape. This created a calm and logical transition between the original house and the new extension.
We focused on continuity. The roof from the existing building was extended and carried through to unify the old and new parts into one single volume. We avoided unnecessary formal gestures and instead relied on the original proportions and roofline to create a coherent architectural expression.
Materials and Technical Upgrades
A major part of the project involved a complete material transformation. We upgraded the existing house with extra insulation and wrapped both the old and new volumes in untreated cedar wood. We chose the board-on-board cedar cladding for its tactile quality and its ability to weather naturally over time. The wood will gradually change from its initial warm tones to a soft, silvery-grey surface that blends into the surrounding nature.
The entire roof was replaced with new roofing felt on both sections to ensure a technically updated and consistent envelope. A discreet roof overhang was integrated as a precise detail. This adds a sense of lightness to the roofline while protecting the cedar façade from the elements.
Connection to the Landscape
The architecture opens up towards the landscape through large, carefully positioned windows. These openings draw daylight deep into the rooms and establish a clear visual relationship between the interior and the terrain. The house remains grounded and respectful of the unique topography of the site.
