Interior design project for the brand Moli, a bar-restaurant of Colombian food that seeks to be a reference of its culture and traditions in the city of Cuenca.
The cultural identity is approached from a different position than usual, avoiding falling into common or too explicit places that pretend to tell a culture from the traditional, so elements of urban culture and its image are taken, in order to turn the space into a popular street of Colombia.
Three zones constitute the project: the kitchen and services, concentrating in an organized way the different activities required for the logistics of the restaurant. The bar area, being the first place where urban elements such as murals, the characteristic hanging lights as a symbol of popular street party, the interior walls worked in such a way that allow to understand the exteriorization of the space,
Finally the art zone, the multipurpose space of the project, which houses not only the diners, but becomes the area, which can host live music, rotating exhibitions of posters of traditional Cali printing, being samples of popular elements of Colombian culture.
On the other hand, the conditions of a house of heritage value in the Historic Center of Cuenca play an important role in defining the character of the intervention. The project seeks to restore an altered space of the original building, freeing the existing additions, and making the rooms and their materiality visible, as a witness of the colonial architecture of the city. Thus, the new elements incorporated, such as lighting, hydro-sanitary installations and furniture, are shown as external elements to the architecture, thus minimizing the intervention in the building, prioritizing its reversible character.
Materiality is the guiding thread of the project, as elements that are potentially visible in the most popular sectors or neighborhoods of Colombia are chosen and transformed into their aesthetic language. Reused materials, together with the interior lighting, highlight elements such as the bar and the decorative zinc wall, creating a neighborhood party atmosphere. With this objective, the mural is added as a form of cultural expression of great importance in the revitalization of urban spaces in Colombia. The art exhibition by Colombian urban artist Ponky (@cachalotestudio), brings to the project characters from the collective imagination of his country.
