Explanatory Note
I. The concept idea (No revolution>Yes evolution)
The concept of our design assumes housing for certain age group of people, namely for people aged from 16 to 25. It seems to us, that in this precise period of life a human being is most perceptive to external influences, and impressions from experiences gained in that period form the core of an individual. Enduring, favorable, highly comfortable living environment of the student, in our view, affords all chances to attain a well-furnished and intellectual community - fellowship of young people. Students are a special cohort of the society.
The proposed living environment of students will be a place for a night's lodging, repose and entertainment during the most interesting period of achievement of personhood. The word «studiosus» was borrowed from Latin and means the «interested one», but subsequently this word began to stand for «trainee» (attending classes). Underlying the above, namely achievement of personhood not only as an individual, but also acquiring of professional skills, our design proposal was associated with enclosed space of the community or even fellowship of students with their own code of conduct, rules of «cohabitation». In addition, we wanted to integrate this environment into overall urban fabric with rules of larger scale.
Due to the aforesaid, the proposed structure is divided into the following functional zones:
1. Public zone at ground floor level (we took the liberty to introduce here such facilities as Lounge of the main entrance, Bicycle stand, Administration, Guards, Security service, Small conference hall, Meeting room, Gallery, Library, Hairdresser's parlor, Pharmacy, Medical post, public WC).
This allows not only to use conveniences of the urban environment, but also to earn a little money during free hours.
2. On the same level of the ground floor we intend to accommodate household, loading, sanitary-hygiene rooms, as well as Section of public catering (Cafe), accessible not only to residents of this dormitory, but also guests, neighbors, etc.
3. Continuing the theme of integration of the dormitory into overall urban fabric, we propose to organize open terraced green yard in the inner courtyard. This yard is situated at the level of - (minus) 3.1 meters. This yard will have underground communication with Dance Club Cafe, with auditoriums, sports-recreation section (Swimming pool, Massage parlor), as well as small cinema hall and membership workshops (underground culture>underground philosophy).
4. Main lodgings will be located on levels 2 and 3 (±3.1m-±6.2m). In these 2 floors we envisage 75 living cells from single-bed containers with separate WC, with built-in lockers and exit to green terraces. Communication between all containers is foreseen through cantilever type corridor-gallery. Along with that, first and second floor will have a 3-m horizontal shift between them. The aforesaid terraces will be formed using roof of the first floor. In turn, at the level of 9.3 m, green roofing will be organized with the possibility to use it as observation platform, planting of greenery and arrangement of sun-protection pergolas. Also in this section we plan to arrange fifteen 2-bed rooms on the first floor.
5. Each floor will have 44 containers, and common kitchen-dining room will be organized for every 22 containers and there will be lavenderia, combined with storage rooms for the personnel and inventories. At the level of the first and second floor we foresee rooms for resting, physical exercises and meeting room.
II. Structural solution.
The proposed structure consists of two parts:
1. 85 containers with dimensions of 9000 х 2990 х 3100
2. Independent spatial frame structure made of pipes, with a pitch of 8.5 m. These two structures will only supplement each other, but at the same time containers of the first floor do not carry load of the second floor. This allows us to place all service lines between niches formed between containers (sewage, ventilation, cold water, electric power supply). We propose to arrange non-centralized heating and hot water supply: it will be autonomous for every 3 containers by means of using solar batteries and cells located on terraces. Also, we propose to use sun-protection elements from perforated aluminum and energy-efficient glazing.
The impressionism style in arts had overturned traditional perception of the reality and in our opinion, it had a strong effect on further development of fine arts and culture as a whole.
