This project converts a former stable in suburban Vienna into a contemporary restaurant by reframing regional architectural heritage through a restrained material palette and clear spatial hierarchy. The concept is built on the dialogue between two contrasting spatial conditions: the openness of the existing double-height volume and the intimacy characteristic of traditional Austrian interiors. Their calibrated coexistence defines the project’s atmosphere and functional adaptability.
The preserved double-height hall serves as the central volume, emphasizing natural light, verticality, and uninterrupted sightlines. Large-format tiles and a consistent palette of wood, stone, and metal reinforce material clarity, while simple timber furniture supports spatial rhythm without dominating the architecture. A discreet, layered lighting system introduces vertical articulation and allows seamless transitions between daylit transparency and evening warmth.
A timber-and-metal stairway functions both as circulation and as a sculptural insertion within the main space. Its open-riser structure maintains visual continuity, leading to a mezzanine screened with vertical timber slats that adds programmatic capacity without compromising volumetric integrity.
Secondary areas intentionally adopt a more intimate scale. Lower ceilings, softer lighting, and a fireplace introduce a domestic character that contrasts with the openness of the central hall, providing quieter zones for slower-paced use. On the upper level, a series of semi-enclosed dining zones - unified by consistent materials and colors - offer privacy while remaining connected to the main space. A bar balcony with an emerald-tiled counter engages directly with the open kitchen, reinforcing transparency as part of the dining experience.
A compact children’s area integrates a multi-level play structure while maintaining material continuity, broadening the program without disrupting the overall architectural logic.
Overall, the project articulates a contemporary interpretation of local typologies, balancing expressive restraint with spatial richness. Through thoughtful reuse of the existing structure, controlled lighting, and material coherence, the design creates a flexible and cohesive environment that respects its context while supporting diverse patterns of occupation.
