Situated along the Keizersgracht in the historic heart of Amsterdam, this monumental canal house has been carefully renovated and modernized to a design by BNLA architects. The entire structural framework of the national monument has been meticulously restored, while the interior has been completely reimagined in collaboration with interior designer Wonderstruck.
With a floor area of over 480 m², the residence is defined by its characteristically narrow and deep layout, arranged across five levels. The front and rear sections of the house are connected by an impressive central staircase, which acts as the architectural backbone of the home and organizes the flow between the different floors.
Preserving heritage
Upon acquisition, the monumental canal house still retained numerous valuable historic details. Yet the foundation had significantly settled and several heritage elements had aged considerably over time. BNLA Architects responded with a comprehensive plan for structural and spatial improvements, complemented by an extensive interior design from Wonderstruck design.
Throughout the renovation, historic features classic moldings, ornate decorative details, and distinctive fireplaces were carefully restored, celebrating the building’s rich heritage while seamlessly integrating modern comforts.
An immersive experience
Walking through the residence reveals two distinct worlds. In the front of the house, the vibrant energy of the city is fully embraced. Large windows offer expansive views over the canals while allowing an abundance of natural daylight to flood the interior.
At the rear of the property, a sense of calm prevails, enhanced by views of the generous enclosed city garden. The adjoining rooms have an intimate and serene character, offering space for rest and contemplation.
Classic with a contemporary touch
The spectacular open-plan kitchen at the rear of the property features an intriguing interplay of modern and classical elements. The view over the garden and the abundant daylight streaming through the large windows create a serene and tranquil space in the heart of the city.
The study on the bel étage and the richly articulated bathroom in the attic have each been designed with their own distinct character, combining contemporary and classical elements in harmony with the historic nature of the building. Natural stone accents are paired with oak timber features, luxurious wallpapers and textiles, and a bespoke lighting plan.
Throughout the residence, a consistent narrative of classic and modern design, richness and elegance, has been carefully woven together.
Ultimate luxury
What lends this canal house an additional layer of luxury is the fully renovated basement level. Here, a guest suite, a generous lounge with a home cinema and a private bar have been created.
Accessible via an exclusive custom-designed staircase from the bel étage, these spaces exude a sense of contemporary warmth while preserving the legibility of the building’s original character.
BNLA architects has succeeded in breathing new life into an outdated monumental canal house, introducing carefully chosen elements and materials to create a contemporary expression. By reconfiguring the layout, a luxurious residence has emerged—one that makes optimal use of both the lively atmosphere of the canal district and the tranquility found in the heart of the city.
