On a corner lot of .38 acre, with an approximate 6.5% slope downhill to the west, solar access is abundant, but there is also occasional wind coming mainly from the north. Views of the Cascade mountains, from Mt Jefferson to Mt Bachelor are available from the lot. Orientation was determined to maximize views, privacy, and light; and to minimize the appearance of the driveway and garage. The proposed design is for a 3,343 sf home that is comprised of 3 wings with floor elevations that step up with the grade: the main living area and garage; kids’ rooms; and an art studio. Each of these connected wings encloses 3 sides of a SE-facing semi-private courtyard; the 4th side is enclosed by a retaining wall of about 3’ high, on the major street side. There is also a covered patio on the Northwest side of the house, which helps increase the living spaces to the outdoors. Materials for the exterior of the home include natural wood siding, stone, glass, and standing seam metal roofs on sloped roofs.
