Formerly called Theodora, and located in North Seattle’s Ravenna neighborhood, this Northwest Modern heavy-timber building was designed by Grant Copeland and Cervenak. Constructed by Volunteers of America in 1965, it served low income and elderly disabled persons. A congregate living facility, it contained 113 sleeping units and shared kitchen, dining and amenity spaces on a rare 64,000 sq ft lot.
The substantial renovation of the existing building combines existing units, creating 52 studio, 1- and 2-bedroom dwelling units. An additional 36 units were added to the south of each building wing. The new design pays homage to the style of the existing building while appearing as its own striking new modern addition. The two buildings are connected by elevated walkways, enclosed in glass.
