How About Studio was invited by the Southbank Centre to create an art installation and mobile retail structure for Festival of Love 2016, that responded to the delightful transformation of the Southbank’s site by Jeppe Hein’s Appearing Rooms Fountain, into one of play, water and public enjoyment.
Inspired by the tiled landscapes of public pools, and dreaming of drifting icebergs, we designed a durable mobile structure that twists and unfolds from a static geometric form to create a dynamic and multifaceted artistic installation.
David Hockney’s painting “A Bigger Splash” (1967) was a key inspiration in the design, with a pixelated graphic of the painting depicted in tiles, and its colour palette used for the pink pool ladder and canopy framing.
In addition to these elements, mirrored and brushed gold surfaces bring the warm and reflective qualities of the water’s surface to the site.
