The MM House stems from a desire to create specific connections with Sydney Harbour's iconic landscape. A refined sense of transparency defines the layered plan, placing domestic life against the natural and urban backdrop of the harbour and city skyline. The house's orientation and configuration curate distinct viewpoints, seamlessly linking interior spaces to the landscape beyond. Subtle level changes reveal new perspectives of the harbour and gently delineate the flow of space within the home. Formally geometric, the house is punctuated by courtyards and openings that introduce unexpected views, adding complexity to the composition. Living spaces extend outward, dissolving boundaries through operable glazed doors. Double-height voids in both the living areas and courtyards enhance this connection, offering a sequence of framed moments throughout the home.
Conceptual Framework
The project has been designed to be robust and endure the setting of its coastal environment. With the advancements in
material technologies realised in bion- ics, the external facade is enveloped in a self cleaning render. Allowing nature to clean and revitalise the veneer whilst repelling harsh abrasive salts from the harbour. In order to move away from a predominately flat surface resolution, characterised by contemporary applications of render, we adopted a hand crafted technique. The finish is applied by spraying the substructure then hand pressing with a trowel, giving depth and irregularity to the strong geometric form. Internally the house materialises as an arrangement of refined surfaces and details, layered against the raw and elemental nature of concrete, marble and timber. This play, balances the homes reduced external palette and invites warmth and tactility to the project.
