MM House
Santiago de Querétaro, Mexico
MM house is located in Querétaro, part of the horizontal condominium El Nido. This 7,340 ft2 home – situated in a 10,650 ft2 plot – takes in its environment with lots of natural light, tactile materials, and a keen attention to detail in both its design and construction.
The program is arranged in a single volume wrapped around a central patio, taking inspiration from both traditional and contemporary Mexican architecture. The ground level houses the public spaces – dining room, living room, terrace, studio, etc. – and the service areas of the house, all connected by a continuous hallway illuminated by the courtyard outside. Every room is arranged to ensure nature is never far away; in fact, the plot’s existing trees informed the design of the house and serve as a backdrop for the activity indoors.
The second story is reserved for the family’s rooms and private quarters, mirroring the arrangement downstairs. By clustering the rooms upstairs around the central patio, natural ventilation helps mitigate the effects of Querétaro’s drastic temperature swings. Every room is carefully placed in accordance with its use and the site’s orientation, ensuring livable, enjoyable spaces.
The variety of materials used reflects a deep love for careful assembly and precise craftsmanship. Wood and stone, materials with a deep connection to Mexican tradition, come together as protagonists of the space; a sloped ceiling supported by wooden beams is made new through its dialogue with the rest of the composition. Each space comes to life with the interplay of these natural materials and the special quality of the light.
Comfort was of the utmost importance, reflected in the choice of materials, furniture, and bioclimatic solutions. The glass used was tailored for its particular orientation, allowing western-facing rooms to enjoy views of the garden and surrounding canopy. Low-E glass was installed to limit radiation and maintain a comfortable temperature indoors. As a scarce resource in the area, water and its handling were paid close attention, using water treatment in-situ to both soften and reuse it responsibly.
Employing the latest in technology to meet the user’s needs, MM House was designed and built responsibly, assuredly, and precisely. The outside is brought into the meticulously crafted spaces, as both the natural and built environment come together to ensure the user’s comfort.
