MIYABI was for many years a small and modest restaurant which fame is attributed to the sincerity and the quality of its food. A new and bigger establishment in northern Mérida gave us the opportunity to reflect these characteristics in architecture. The owners, a Mexican chef and his wife, from Japan, emphasized on the sincerity of their plates, and how the don’t hide the natural flavors and looks of their food with other ingredients that aren’t necessary. They wanted a modern place, a reinterpretation of the Japanese culture, but not in a literal way. One of the challenges was to translate years of local tradition into a project that responded to the businesses growth, trying to avoid alienating existing clients and meeting all their expectations. Wood was used as an interpretation of japanese lattices, where its exposed veins are an answers to the sincerity of the food served in the restaurant; they remind us the natural lines in fresh fish dishes. On the ceiling and on the back wall, wood plays an important role, it embraces the whole restaurant, creating a cozy atmosphere, that lowers the restaurant scale and provides acoustic comfort. The position of the wooden elements on the ceiling, allows the costumers to have different experiences each time they visit the place. During the evening, certain of the ceiling elements are accentuated with indirect lightning. At the back wall, there is a traditional zen garden. It is a distribution element which creates vestibules for the restrooms on one side and for the kitchen on the other. The tableware was designed with the clients. We wanted to create unique pieces that represented local handicraft combined with a strong japanese essence. It was made in a little town in the middle of Yucatán.
