A diverse riverside precinct on the Yangtze
MixC Wuchang is Lead8’s second MixC retail development in the city of Wuhan and brings the brand’s presence to the developing waterfront area.
The site of the large-scale project is located near the Yangtze River Central Business District and along the waterfront of the Yangtze River, adjacent to the Wuhan Greenland Centre. Spanning 1.5 million square metres of multi-functional riverside area, MixC Wuchang introduces a new multi-dimensional interconnected built environment to the city.
The vision was to drive new possibilities in the evolving commercial district. Lead8’s design looked to weave the development into the urban fabric, connecting the public realm, intertwining landscape and facilitating connections to neighbouring developments and public transport.
Activated Green Realms
The 250,000 sqm retail development is spread across two land parcels and part of a wider mixed-use masterplan that will become a core landmark along the waterfront. The two sites are connected by a five-storey bridge, a design feature conceived as a ‘stage in the sky’ that provides a platform for the internal shopping street and unique leasing opportunities.
The five-storey aerial stage with an open landscaped roof platform provides unbroken river views, and curved skylights to draw natural light into the buildings below across both plots.
Public realm landscaping and sunken plazas also line the two sites, providing an activated green sanctuary with multiple access points to the underground retail space. The open-air space brings opportunities for casual and al fresco dining, natural landscapes, and an expansive children’s leisure zone near the waterfront.
A Retail Landmark
The façade design has been influenced by the concept of ‘mountains and flowing water’, utilising open curtain walls and terracotta baguette sticks of varying densities to present an artistic representation of Chinese landscape paintings.
As the main retail centre in the emerging region, the project provides more than 500 stores and experiences across lifestyle retail, dining, beauty, sports, children’s formats, entertainment and fashion to introduce a new commercial landmark to the city.
