MITTE is a Bar-Restaurant-Gallery located in an old residential area in the district of Sheung Wan, Hong Kong.
The concept at the back is a urban and decadent container for an edgy yet sophisticated interior, inspired by the existing site and european references.
The design is simple and exalts the roughness of the materials. The Dj booth is made of a wood mould with concrete poured inside that shows the wood board's texture. The underside of the bar is made of reclaimed wood boards used by local carpenters to chop other boards. They lay them on the ground and cut, so every indentation is random. It took more than six months to collect all the boards because most carpenters didn't want to sell them.
Hong Kong is quite sensitive about sound so we did double glazing on the windows and then added 10cm foam insulation on the ceiling and walls. The acoustics are quite good here. The sound system is Genelec, which is used to produce music, so it's a very clean sound.
The sound quality is helped by three black metal meshes installed on the long wall and used to hang art works during exhibitions. The metal meshes keep the walls flexible and help increase the sound quality and insulation, breaking the sound waves.
