Mission Canyon Residence
Perched high in the foothills above Santa Barbara, our design embodies the quintessential Santa Barbara indoor–outdoor lifestyle. The dramatic foothill site affords 360-degree panoramic views. Each living space was carefully positioned to frame a distinct vista: sunrise and the Rincon coastline to the east, the Santa Barbara city and harbor to the south, sunset over the Pacific Ocean to the west, and the towering Los Padres mountain range to the north. Outdoor terraces extend seamlessly from these interiors, with sweeping views as their backdrop. In the great room, a fully pocketing glass wall vanishes into the structure, opening a 35-foot-wide, floor-to-ceiling expanse onto the pool terrace—transforming the indoor living room into the outdoors.
Designing a “glass house” in this exposed foothill environment required balancing transparency with resilience. The home needed to be comfortable year-round, energy-efficient, water-wise, and fire-safe—particularly since it replaces a previous residence lost in the 2009 Jesusita Wildfire.
For comfort and efficiency, we precisely calculated roof overhangs to block harsh summer sun while inviting warmth in the winter. High-performance windows and doors maximize cross-ventilation with cooling ocean breezes, while concealed roll-down shades provide added daylight control and privacy. Courtyard walls shelter outdoor spaces from hillside winds and enhance privacy from neighbors. A discreet solar thermal system heats the pool, and the landscape employs drought-tolerant planting, drip irrigation, and low-flow fixtures to conserve water.
Fire safety was paramount. The home incorporates fire-resistant materials and detailing throughout: a high fire-rated roof, plaster eaves and walls, metal fascias, concrete floors and patios, fire-rated hardwood decking, and dual-laminated glazing in metal-framed windows and doors. An automated sprinkler system, fire-truck access with turnaround, and defensible landscape of native and fire-retardant species further enhance protection.
On the Central California Coast, our temperate Mediterranean climate invites living both indoors and out. This residence reflects that spirit—an architecture that connects to its site and views, while providing safety, comfort, and sustainability for years to come.
