Sensorial Flagship Store by JUJU Studio

With its carefully curated and thoughtfully executed design, Miss Circle's flagship store is poised to become a memorable destination for fashion lovers in New York City. Conceived by JUJU Studio, the 2-floor, 2600+ square foot retail space draws inspiration from the brand's commitment to quality and attention to detail, and expresses an ambition to lead a new direction for what fashion retail could mean.

“In the digital age, where the majority of sales are made online, the purpose of opening a brick-and-mortar store has shifted from solely being a place to make transactions, to creating a space to foster a sense of community and engagement among customers. The store serves as a playground where the customers come to socialize, take pictures, and try on products. This not only gives customers a chance to interact with the products in person but also provides an opportunity for them to connect with like-minded individuals. Additionally, this can also empower the customers to engage with the brand and each other, and create content that reflects their personal style and brand association.”

Founded in 2021, JUJU Studio is a New York-based spatial design practice that is led by Jing Ju, who is known for creating both temporary and permanent spaces that push the boundaries of sensorial and immersive experiences. The studio's work spans various scales and creative disciplines, blending sculpture and architecture to create unique and exceptional brand experiences that are both functional and visually stunning.

The design team behind Miss Circle's flagship store aimed to depart from the typical fashion retail design, which often relies on grand and elaborate displays to draw customers in. Instead, the design team’s goal was to create a space that was more relatable and inviting, creating a fully engaging and stimulating experience that brings the brand to life. The design approach is based on five principles, each of which serves to achieve this goal.

The first is the creation of an exclusive shopping space. Through the use of luxurious materials, elegant lighting, and a sense of spaciousness, the store is designed to convey a sense of exclusivity and refinement. The second is the use of architectural pops of color. The store is designed to be a visual feast with a dynamic and memorable environment. The third is the use of carefully curated art and unique design objects that are intended to become distinct signifiers of the brand, while also adding an element of surprise and intrigue. The fourth is the use of sophisticated playfulness, where interactive store elements are designed to invite guests to engage in the ever-evolving space, encouraging them to explore, discover and interact with the brand's offerings, making the store a destination that customers want to return to. The final is the use of product displays designed to become focal points, showcasing the core of the brand through the use of striking lighting, minimalistic displays, and a focus on the product's design.

The store's long, linear floor plan, which includes a wide, open space on the ground floor and an upper level, is visually segregated into zones with the use of clothing displays, partitions and red carpets. The series of arches embedded into the walls organize the space and make it easy for customers to navigate the store and explore the different styles of clothes. These design details enhance the store interiors by breaking up the lengthy and monotonous floor plan, creating a sense of movement and flow throughout the space.

The staircase taking customers to the upper level is also adorned with a red carpet, further emphasizing the sense of glamor and celebrity. This design detail not only adds to the overall aesthetic but also serves a functional purpose, guiding customers through the space, and making it easier to navigate.

The dressing rooms on the upper level take on a seductive and alluring feel with the use of the same texture and hues, combined with multiple mirrors, and red satin sofas. The display arches resume along the walls at this level, adding to the continuity of the theatrical ambience of the store. This detail adds a touch of theatrics to the interiors, which is further accentuated by the golden atmosphere created by the warm lighting. The use of red also gives the space a poetic and romantic sensation. The inclusion of plenty of comfortable seating, provided by the red satin sofas, further enriches the customers' shopping experience, allowing them to relax and take their time while browsing and trying on clothes.

One of the standout design elements of the store is the sliding counter that effortlessly transforms between its two functionalities: serving as a check-in counter when hosting events and a floating accessories display counter when there are no events taking place. This demonstrates a thoughtful and efficient use of space, allowing the store to adapt to different situations and needs. The counter's design is sleek and minimalistic, with clean lines and a modern aesthetic that complements the overall design of the store.

The material palette is dominated by customized textured beige walls in the interiors of the store to create an elegant and modern aesthetic. The smooth yet durable surfaces add texture and visual interest to the space, while the beige hue creates a sense of lightness and spaciousness, which is especially important in making the originally compact and linear space appear voluminous and airy. This helps to create an accommodating atmosphere in the closed retail environment where the customers are likely to take their time browsing through the store's selection of clothing and accessories and seek out help from sales associates to create a personalized shopping experience.

Designed with the customer experience in mind, the design offers a unique and innovative retail space that allows the customers to feel captivated and engaged, making it a must-see destination for anyone interested in high-end fashion and an immersive retail experience.
