「MIRAGE HOUSE ― 森に浮かぶサウナー」
MIRAGE HOUSEは、軽井沢の豊かな自然環境と共生しながら、建築の新たな可能性を提示する試みである。本計画の根幹には、「強い建築」と「儚い存在」との二項が共存することにより、建築が単なる機能装置を超え、環境と人間の関係を媒介する存在となるという思想がある。
外形は有機的な繭のようなフォルムを採用し、その外皮にはアクリル系の被膜材を用いることで、半透明かつ反射的な質感を獲得している。この素材は光の条件に応じて表情を変え、晴天時にはシャボン玉のように虹彩を帯び、曇天や雪景では淡い陰翳をまといながら森の風景に溶け込む。建築自体が環境に呼応し、時に強い存在感を示し、時に背景として退く。この可変的な姿勢は、建築の固定的イメージを超え、自然との対話を生み出す。
内部は木造を主体とした架構で構成され、二つのゾーンに分けられる。左側のサウナ空間は、曲線的な木質のレイヤーに包まれ、熱と香りが拡散する洞窟的な体験を意図した。段床ベンチの蹴込み部分には断熱ガラスを組み込み、外部の雪景色を細長いスリットとして導入することで、熱環境と視覚環境の緊張感を同時に成立させている。右側の休憩室およびロッカー空間は、光と木の温もりを受け止める緩やかな領域であり、身体の回復と精神の静謐を支える。
さらに屋外には水風呂を設置し、軽井沢の清冽な気候と四季の変化を直接体感できる構成とした。これにより内部と外部を往還する身体のリズムが形成され、建築は閉じられた装置ではなく、自然環境と人間の媒介体として作用する。
MIRAGE HOUSEは、素材の特性を最大限に活かしながら、建築の存在論的側面を問い直すものである。木材の温もりとアクリルの透明性、鉄骨基礎の浮遊感は、互いに異質な要素を統合し、強靭さと儚さを併せ持つ建築像を提示する。本計画は、軽井沢という文脈において、建築を「強い存在」であると同時に「蜃気楼」のように揺らぐ現象として位置づけ、人と環境の新たな関係を創出することを目指している。
“MIRAGE HOUSE ― A Floating Sauna in the Forest”
MIRAGE HOUSE is an architectural experiment that seeks to redefine the relationship between architecture, nature, and human experience. Conceived within the unique environment of Karuizawa, the project embodies the dual qualities of permanence and ephemerality—what we might describe as “Strong Architecture” on one hand, and a fleeting mirage on the other. By embracing both extremes, the building is no longer a mere functional device, but a medium that negotiates between human presence and the natural environment.
The form takes on an organic, cocoon-like geometry, wrapped in an acrylic membrane that produces both translucency and reflectivity. This material allows the surface to transform under varying conditions of light: refracting iridescent hues under clear skies, dissolving into muted shadows during snowfall, or blending softly with misty forests. The building thus shifts its role—sometimes asserting a vivid presence, at other times retreating into the background. This oscillation resists the notion of architecture as a static object, instead proposing a responsive dialogue with nature.
Internally, the structure is articulated through a primarily wooden framework, divided into two main zones. The sauna chamber to the left is enveloped in flowing layers of wood, creating a cave-like environment where heat and aroma are diffused. Slender insulated glass slits are integrated into the risers of the tiered seating, framing elongated glimpses of the snowy landscape outside. This juxtaposition produces a simultaneous tension between thermal intensity and visual coolness, heightening the immersive quality of the space. The lounge and locker area to the right functions as a counterpoint—an area of repose where soft light and the warmth of timber foster both physical recovery and contemplative stillness.
Externally, a cold plunge pool is placed in direct relation to the forest, reinforcing a bodily rhythm of circulation between interior heat and exterior cold. The building is thus not a sealed apparatus, but a mediating organism between humans and their environment, situating the act of bathing within a broader ecological cycle.
MIRAGE HOUSE interrogates the ontology of architecture through its material choices and spatial strategies. The warmth of timber, the translucency of acrylic, and the floating sensation suggested by its structural system converge into a singular architectural image—both robust and ephemeral. Within the context of Karuizawa, the project positions architecture simultaneously as a strong, enduring presence and as a fleeting phenomenon, a mirage, creating a new paradigm for the interrelationship of architecture, nature, and human experience.
