Introduction.
In 2015, I read one book at this time. It is a book titled ' 建築光幻学 - 透光不透視の世 界 – “Architectural light illusion – the world of translucent insanity” ' by Takashi Hasegawa and Tetsuro Kurokawa, published in 1977. In this book the word " 透光不 透視 " (translucent insanity) is frequently used and it means to let light through but to block visibility. For example, it refers to the type of light generated by a shoji (a curtain or a translucent door). While reading this book, I wondered whether it would be possible to create a new light space, different from the materials used in light architecture at the time, and possible only in the present day.
A passage in the text reads as follows ; Architecture becomes a receptacle for light. It triggers various optical phenomena, in which light diffuses, condenses, spectra and synthesises new light in the receptor. Architecture seems to be broadening its scope from the age of mechanics to the age of chemistry and then to the age of optics. This may be a sign of the return of translucent and impermeable architecture. In other words, the required forms in contemporary architectural spaces were interpreted as being newly created by the optical treatment of materials. This influence has determined my own current thought in dealing with optics.
Concept.
One day I discovered another goldfish in a tank that was supposed to have only one goldfish in it. It was a mirror-like phenomenon created by the water, which made it appear that there were more goldfish. This was the moment when I encountered a familiar mirage. The optical phenomenon that is the key element of this space is "total reflection". The appearance of the surrounding scenery reflected by total reflection and the scenery in front of you is a strange sight, as if an illusion has been triggered. The sight of scenery that should not be in front of you is like a mirage.
Summary.
This work was created as an undergraduate graduation project. I was able to receive a grant, which allowed me to buy acrylic board and actually produce this piece I had been thinking about. I did the whole process myself. I mastered the specialised techniques by training with a professional. Therefore, all the grant money could be spent on materials. With this work, I discovered the possibilities for the intersection of space and optics.
