The project is located in Jinshui District, Zhengzhou City, Henan Province, China. The street-level store is 100 meters east of the intersection of East Agricultural Road and Ruyi Road. The original store has more than ten years of experience. Influenced by the overall economy, the original three adjacent openings were consolidated into a single space in order to reduce fixed costs. Therefore, the main task of the design was to effectively display the number of meters of hanging clothes in this reduced space, which originally required three rooms, and at the same time to respond effectively to the characteristics of this kind of longitudinal space site.
The load-bearing columns next to the main entrance result in a doorway that is large on the left and small on the right. The design aims to balance the layout of the entrance by using the large side as a window display, forming a diamond shape that protrudes from indoors to outdoors, while the small side extends indoors along the folded edges of the window, forming a perpendicular relationship with the triangular display area, which divides the original indoor space on the right side of the room into two parts, half indoor and half outdoor, and lengthens the customer's path of experience when they enter the store. Setting part of the indoor as outdoor increases the overall spatial variation and depth of the frontage while also responding to the entrance of the store on the street.
The store is a longitudinal space, four meters wide and twenty meters long, with a narrow frontage and deep interior. The design redefines the scale of the space by placing irregularly enclosed wooden devices within the rectangular site, changing people's perception of the original space's blandness and uniformity, and transforming the way the space is used to maximize the use of space.
The design solution utilizes the longitudinal depth of the site, combined with the spacing of the columns, to divide the entire long space into three small areas, including two triangular areas and a semi-circular area, extending the linear hanging meters through folding lines and arcs, increasing the display surface while the remaining space at the intersection of the newly placed wood frame system and the original building wall serves as a changing and storage space.
As the only intervention within the site, the design team communicated with the construction team to create a 1:1 model experiment in the factory in advance, to verify the height of the wooden enclosure, the thickness of the floor, the width, and the overall proportion of the experiment, and then transported to the site for assembly after confirming that there were no errors.
