Mindescapes Club / A Minimalist Retreat for Creative Minds
Studio Detail Architects have crafted a peaceful mountain retreat in the scenic Nilgiri Hills, offering expansive views of the surrounding landscape.
Perched at an altitude of 2,240 meters (7,350 feet) above sea level, MindEscapes unfolds/emerges as an exclusive club resort catering to professionals like directors, actors, singers, and scriptwriters and many more from all corners of India. Providing a serene retreat to both, relax and work on their defined projects, the resort offers sweeping panoramic views of the ever-changing seasons in the surrounding landscape. Beyond its captivating architecture, this project is designed with a range of amenities ensuring a stay that is both comfortable and productive for its visitors.
The client possessed an ageing building, which the Studio Detail Architects reimagined with contemporary, minimal design interiors and landscapes. This approach not only revitalized the old facade but also addressed less appealing walls by cladding them with locally sourced grey stone. The design of the project is intricately shaped by the surrounding topography, lush vegetation, and majestic mountain views. Set against the natural terrain, the location transforms with each evolving season, offering a captivating backdrop. The presence of diverse wildlife, including bison, leopards, and Indian wild dogs, adds an exhilarating touch to the overall experience.
The design takes the form of a 'C,' ensuring every space captures the breathtaking mountain views. The ground floor hosts seven suites, each themed in a rainbow spectrum from violet to red, strategically designed to overlook the valley. Each suite follows a unique color theme representing a specific planet, weaving a narrative of distinct emotions. Adorned with animal artefacts and crystal stone sculptures corresponding to their colors, each room becomes a visual narrative. For instance, the first room, Tulip, in royal violet, reflects spirituality associated with Neptune. The thematic journey continues with the Daffodil room in yellow, symbolizing wisdom and power linked to Mars and the Sun, featuring bear and lion sculptures. The expedition concludes with the Amaryllis room in red, revolving around Saturn and Earth, imparting a sense of security and manifestation. Technological convenience is seamlessly integrated, allowing guests to control drapes, lighting, temperature, TV channels, music, and schedule room service or wake-up calls to view the beautiful sunrise from a single device. At the rear, a waterbody surrounded by a meticulously designed landscape creates a soothing soundscape, enhancing guest tranquility. The waterbody hosts local fish and attracts other organisms, for guests to witness and enjoy.
Ascending to the first floor, it houses the restaurants Celeste and Nirvana. The design incorporates glass railings to preserve unobstructed views of the surrounding landscape. The Divino, a bar offers a captivating platform with bar stools, and projected screens for match telecasts, creating an inviting atmosphere for public gatherings. The deliberate choice of minimal and cozy furniture, coupled with locally sourced and treated wooden flooring and ceilings, infuses warmth into the space, creating a comfortable setting against the cold Ooty weather. Kaizen is an outdoor dining area that allows discussions amidst the flowing wind. Lumina is a private screening room, featuring comfortable recliner chairs for guests' entertainment. The conference room, Conclave, is designated for council meetings. The highlighting feature of this floor is the Tipping Point, a 7-feet cantilever balcony with seamless glass railing, providing an illusion of floating in the air against the backdrop of mountains. All areas are adorned with tones of grey, contrasting with vibrant artworks created by local artists, adding a unique touch to the space.
The design philosophy prioritizes harmonizing with the natural landscape, aiming to camouflage the building within its natural surroundings rather than making it a focal point. In the early hours, when mist envelops the area, the choice of natural tones, desert grey, for the external walls seamlessly merges with the environment. The unique terrain of Ooty allows for the cultivation of diverse flora, which makes the design include numerous fruit-bearing trees that attract enticing butterflies and birds, effectively creating a miniature ecosystem within the vicinity. Embracing the farm-to-table concept, the resort incorporates a kitchen garden within the landscape, ensuring that fresh produce is readily available. Additionally, the expansive outdoor landscape space serves as the perfect setting for a bonfire, adding a touch of warmth and creating a cozy ambiance.
Setting up the project on a valley, dealing with the contours of the mountain and adapting to changing seasons presented challenges that affected the construction pace. Consequently, additional time was invested in assembling a team, including local labor that underwent specific training to meet the desired finish.
Beyond just accommodation, this project crafts an experience that focuses on sensory details. The sounds of nature, the color theme, the fragrance of indigenous flora, and the tactile experiences, such as locally sourced materials and textures, all contribute to a multisensory journey. The design encourages guests to immerse themselves in the natural elements, providing a respite from the hustle of daily life.
