Inspired by the starry depths of space and Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey”, Milla Nova dress showroom contrasts the bride’s delicate image with stark extraterrestrial landscapes. The first floor, showcasing evening gowns, mimics a desert planet with rock fragments, stone panels, and massive podiums. The shapes and shine of the screens refer to Kubrick’s monoliths. The second floor, dedicated to wedding dresses, draws from the interior spaces of intergalactic ships, blending unearthly elements with humanized, cozy touches through smoother and more delicate colors and textures.
Our design aimed for a simple, minimalistic aesthetic, which presented unique implementation challenges. Achieving the right textures and shades required significant effort. We collaborated with Ukrainian contractor C.I.Form to create 90% of the showroom’s custom decor from our sketches.
The showroom spans three floors, with the basement housing technical rooms, a tailor shop, and a showroom warehouse.
Customers enter through Lipinski Passage into a reception area on the ground floor. This section’s focal point is a tailor-made stainless steel desk with its moon-referencing curved circle. This object is created by bending the steel on factory machines and joining the frame. A lightbox near the reception broadcasts the brand’s promotional videos, produced to harmonize with the showroom’s interior.
To the left of the entrance lies the main sales area for evening gowns, displayed on metal rails and epoxy resin podiums. The microcement-covered floor resembles a worn, scratched planet surface. The key design element of this area is the stones made of gypsum and painted foam covered with microcement, resembling natural stone. A marble-like panel was crafted from plywood, microcement, and plaster.
The first floor also features three fitting rooms with a waiting area. The walls are adorned with metal-like material, and the floors are made of black linoleum resembling black sand.
Ascending to the second floor, customers find a lounge for demonstrating wedding dress, centered around a massive sofa backed by a plasterboard panel covered with hand-carved wooden panels. This rounded wall conceals a small kitchen for preparing drinks for guests. The space is complemented by Driade Roly Poly chairs and natural wood stumps, with lighting provided by the Moooi chandelier from the Flock of Light series.
The second floor also houses four fitting rooms for future brides. One fitting room in an oval semi-closed area features a backlit mirror. A neutral background created with smooth lines and tactile materials gives all focus to the bride. Another fitting room, popular for its natural light, includes custom-made elements such as a baked clay lamp and podiums covered with microcement and hand-painted. The small coffee table is also made of plaster covered with microcement with a metal top.
Throughout the project, we realized our ambitious vision, precisely translating our design into existence. This showroom not only encapsulated our expertise in retail space design; it introduced us to the particularities of the wedding business, allowing us to create a space for special moments in Milla Nova’s clients’ lives.
