Hord Coplan Macht’s healthcare team provided detailed analysis, architectural design, landscape architecture, interior design, and medical planning services for a proposed three-story, 170,000 sf infill addition to MidMichigan Medical Center’s Midland campus. The goal of the project is to create a new Cardiovascular Center of Excellence while replacing the existing 1940’s hospital that has reached the end of its useful life.
In addition, the project includes a phased redevelopment of the center of the ambulatory portion of the campus, and consolidates clinical departments, including a cardiac diagnostic suite, multiple cardiac clinics, patient outreach laboratory, radiology, and vascular clinic; while also providing future space for the expansion for the emergency department, pathology laboratory, and medical offices.
The design solution creates a landmark building to serve as the new home for this integrated service line that serves the 23-county area of MidMichigan Health. It is focused on improving the operations of a disjointed practice today, to support a holistic approach to patient care.
The building stands out as a marker on the campus – a modern building with soaring roofs and a three-story glass atrium that beckons to patients as they arrive. Natural materials, such as brick and stone, in a contemporary cooler palette, create a contrast with the red brick construction of the previous 40 years without alienating the patient population. Functionally the building integrates 6 different outpatient clinics, including a cardiac research program, on a single floor. Physicians and staff have connected off-stage workspace that encourages collaboration within and between different specialties. Directly above, integrated testing services allow for multiple same-day appointments. Including Cardiac Rehab and Community Outreach spaces allows the center to focus on the entire patient continuum including wellness and prevention programs.
