Office space needs to provide a comfortable working environment, and at the same time, it is also a window for visitors to understand the company. It must fully interpret the corporate image. As designers, we deeply feel the significance.
The client of this project is a rapidly growing IT company. Their team is active and young, full of energy that nurtures innovation. However, the products they developed are very sophisticated and mature.
The inspiration for innovation is originally a rough stone. After being constantly polished, it gradually appears refined and tends to be completed. From this energetic company, we have experienced the polishing process that nurtures and creates new things.
According to the needs of the client, we planned three major functional areas: a multi-purpose entrance area, a gallery area for demonstrating products, and a lab area required for experiments. In addition, due to the large number of visitors, we have increased the visitor area and the lab area available for visits to form an experience-based lab exhibition hall.
Together with the above requests, we pay tribute to their rough while meticulous corporate spirit, and carried out the design of this new office space. It is hoped that this will highlight the outstanding products and at the same time bring the company's own ideas and spirit to the front.
First, we reset the site back to the rough state. Different functional zones have their own ceilings, walls and floors design. The main materials are smooth stainless steel plates, metal square tubes, glass fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) grilles, metal grids, color glass and other industrial materials that are made finely to form a contrast effect in the rough space.
The contrast of elements in the office space subtly conveys the coexistence of rough and meticulosity, which also the characteristics of the corporate and those products. In this way, a new office space that combines a lab, a gallery, and an office is born. We hope this space can be an opportunity to inspire innovation for employees.
Entrance Area
The new office can be roughly divided into three areas: entrance area, gallery area, and lab area.
The entrance area is nearly 40m deep and contains a visitor reception desk, a glass display table for robot arms, and a stepped event space.
Unlike ordinary offices, we did not set up common leisure function such as waiting sofas in the entrance hall, but chose to arrange every object in a regular manner, as if it were artwork.
The door leading to the side gallery area is hidden in the entire row of stainless steel wall, revealing a little playfulness.
The entrance area is the first space for visitors to get to know the company. We hope to create a sense of the future that is somewhat abstract and different from everyday.
Glass Display Table
The display table which the robot arm is placed on uses a piece of glass with a total length of 7.5m, and the two ends are supported by metal square pipes with a diameter of 5cm. The structure is not too burdensome, only supports the cut ends, making the overall impression of the table light and slender. Through the dark blue colored glass, the lightings from reflect the blue shade which is the corporate color on the ground. Compared with using blue-color material, the shadows formed by indirect methods can give visitors a strong sensory impression.
Event Area
The stepped event area is composed of temporary installation-like materials such as FRP grille and metal grid. Through the control of the details and closing, the whole body is rough while meticulous. Although the body is not small, it will not give people a sense of oppression because of the light transmission design.
Gallery Area
The gallery area is located behind the huge hidden door made of stainless steel. Due to the large number of visitors, the area is centered on display, and it is a multi-functional space with sofa, display system for displaying company introduction videos, cafe, and compartments for business negotiations.
Contrary to the entrance area, the bare-roofed gallery area is more industrial, displaying robot arms and other sophisticated mechanical products.
Ceilings
We partially added glass fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) grid ceiling to the naked ceiling, which is often used on the ground of temporary outdoor work sites. Lighting equipment is installed inside the grille, which acts as a light shield. The overall lighting in the space is very soft, which helps to create a more abstract atmosphere.
Lab Area
The lab area is centered on a huge IT room for operating big data, with workstations set up around it.
The equipments needed for research, a huge LED screen that display national manufacturing data, the discussion and open communication space, the pantry, and glass whiteboards are set up everywhere. There is no individual compartment in the work area, and the environment is transparent and open, hoping to promote communication and inspiration among employees.
As there is no OA raised floor on site, and the original stone paved ground must be retained, the restrictions are large, and it is impossible to carry out ground wiring and large-scale reconstruction. Therefore, we route all the wires required by all workstations and mechanical equipment from the ceiling and store them in the metal tubes, which not only makey the wires invisible, but also forms the decorative shape of the work table, changing wastes into valuables.
The office space in Changzhou took only 7 weeks from design to completion. The limited time will test the cooperation between the owner and the construction team.
