In 2012, the Mexic-Arte Museum Board of Directors selected FR-EE to design a new museum building, dedicated to traditional and contemporary Mexican, Latino and Latin-American art and culture in Austin, Texas. The museum is designated as the Official Mexican and Mexican American Fine Art Museum of Texas, poising it to become one of the foremost arts institutions in the region.
Located on Congress Avenue and East 5th Street in downtown Austin, traditional and contemporary elements of circularity found in Mexican culture, such as the Aztec calendar and game of Pelota, influence the design. The new museum, in both collection and structure, expresses the nature of the institution and its mission while giving the city a unique destination. The structure of Mexic-Arte is anchored by a central plaza that serves as the main entryway: this iconographic form shapes the building’s identity without compromising the programmatic efficiency of the floor plans. The back of the structure is extended to house the museum services and loading docks.
A dynamic perforated facade of varying sizes provides optimal lighting environment for exhibitions. The skin of the museum is equipped with an LED light system that can be used to project images, program announcements, and site-specific art installations.
