Metal Studio and MasterplanComprehensive Architectural ProjectCharleston, South CarolinaFall

as a synthesis of traditional and modern design elements, the Metal Studio’s
composition is a reflection of Charleston Single House building typologies in
congruence with local, tectonic, and environmental conditions. Consisting of two separate volumes, the
slender profiles of each studio gesture across the site towards a neighboring plantation
house, alluding to the site’s rich heritage. With emphasis on site orientation, the two studios also
align with prevailing wind patterns, block the harsh western sun, and face away
from the noise and pollution of an adjacent vehicular thoroughfare.Comparably
to the Charleston Single House building typology, each studio is composed of
private spaces in the rear with more public programs occupying the front
façade. The individual studios are
perched on the second floor so as to capture the highest possible quality of
light, natural ventilation, and view.
Adjoining each studio and rear storage space are outdoor workspaces,
green roofs, translucent photovoltaic panels, and wrought iron sun screens
which the students forge throughout their education.
